Footnotes

1 Schenker's diary for Friday October 1 records: "Mrs. Deutsch opens the lessons. Only to prevent me from possibly holding her committed to a third lesson [per week], in the first week she cancels the third lesson." (Schenker offered his pupils the alternatives of a two-lesson or three-lesson per week plan, and insisted on their adhering to their choice.)
— On Tuesday October 19, the diary records: "Mrs. Deutsch tells me she has made a mistake over the date and has turned up at 4.45 for a lesson. I seize the opportunity to warn her against overplaying a role for which she is not equipped. I recommend her warmly to pursue studies that she ought to have undertaken long ago. However, I deny her an unsystematized third lesson."
— The diary for Friday October 29 records: "In practise, she would prefer to play the symphonies in her lesson rather than committing herself firmly to a third lesson!"

2 Schenker's diary for October 11 records: "Mrs. Deutsch in an added lesson in Mahler's Second Symphony, which is shortly to be performed."
