French river, its source on the plateau of Langres, eventually flowing into the Seine at Vincennes, near Paris (also the département in north-eastern France through which the river flows).

Two battles of World War I are associated particularly with this name: the first battle of Marne, September 6–12, 1914, in which the French army, assisted by the British, halted the August German advance 30 km (20 miles) from Paris at the Marne River; and the second Battle of Marne, July 15–August 5, 1918, in which the French army, supported by Americans, British, and Italians, succeeded in repelling the Germans' last major offensive of the war.
