Sehr geehrter Herr! 1

Auf Bg. 19 müßten die Ordnungszahlen der Notensple um 1 erhöht werden, da 253 zweimal auf S. 289 u. 291 gesetzt war. 2 Dagegen weist merkwürdigerweise Bog. 20 die Ordnungszahlen ganz richtig, wovon ich Sie hiermit, um Misverständ[n]issen u. etwaigen irrtümlichen Ordnungen vorzubeugen, in Kenntnis setze.

Gleichzeitig folgen Bg. 19 u. 21. 3

The numbers of the music examples in gathering 19 will have to be increased by 1, since [the number] 253 has been allocated twice: on pp. 289 and 291. 2 By contrast, strangely enough, gathering 20 gives the numbers quite correctly. I herewith draw this to your attention in order to forestall any misunderstanding or possible incorrect numbering.

Gatherings 19 and 21 will follow shortly. 3

1 Writing of this postcard is not recorded in Schenker's diary, but the latter does record: "Letzter Bogen von Cotta angelangt!" ("Final gathering received from Cotta!").

2 In the finished volume, Ex. 253 appears on p.289, and Ex. 254 on p.291. Gathering 19 = pp. 289–304, hence presumably Exx. 254–262 were all originally lower by one. Gathering 20 = pp. 305–320.

3 Gathering 21 = pp. 321–336. Schenker’s diary for September 20 records (OJ 1/5, p.20): "Bg. 19, 21 u. 22 fertiggestellt." ("Gatherings 19, 21, and 22 finished.").
