Zu meinem Bedauern muss ich Ihnen nun mitteilen, dass das Ergebnis dieser Recherche ein sehr betrübendes war, denn diese beiden Konzerte erweisen sich als sehr wenig gangbar und haben in den 10 Jahren ihres Erscheinens noch lange nicht die Stichkosten ammortisiert, dass ich es unter diesen Umständen nicht verantworten könnte, ein weiteres Konzert herauszubringen. Grateful thanks for your kind suggestion of publishing the Mozart A major Concerto for two pianos four hands. ¹ Immediately upon receipt of your letter, we looked at our pressbooks ² to form an impression of how well the Mozart C major and C minor Concertos already issued by us for two pianos four hands have sold. To my regret, I must now inform you that the results of these inquiries made distressing reading, for these two concertos turn out to have sold very poorly and in the ten years since their appearance not yet by a long way to have amortised their engraving costs. Under these circumstances, I could not justify publishing yet another concerto. Sorry though I always am therefore not to be able to comply with a suggestion from you, I cannot take your proposal any further.

N.B. I am expecting proofs any moment now from the firm of Breitkopf & Härtel to whom the production of your book on Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony was entrusted. ³
