Footnotes

Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 3/9, p. 3060, April 28, 1927: "Von der U.-E. (Br.): dankt für die Mitteilung, wird die Korrekturen dieser „wichtigen Sonate“ raschestens besorgen; da H. nichts zu zahlen hat, begreift er die Wichtigkeit des opus 57!" ("From UE (letter): thanks me for the communication, will take care of the corrections to this 'important sonata' as quickly as possible; since Hertzka does not have to pay anything, he understands the importance of Opus 57!"). This letter exists in two sources: OC 52/834, the dispatched letter with printed letterhead and signatures, and WSLB 376, the carbon copy lacking letterhead and both signatures but initialed.

Cf. WSLB 375, April 25, 1927.

"freuen" (are delighted) and "diese wichtige Sonate" (this important sonata) underlined in crayon, and quotation-marks written around "wichtige," all probably by Schenker.

This crucial addition, probably in the same hand as the signature therefore by Rothe's secretary or Rothe herself, agrees with Schenker's sarcastic diary record.
