Da ich nun kein staatliches Zeugnis besitze, bitte ich Sie mir ein Zeugnis ausstellen zu wollen, worauf Sie nur bestätigen daß ich in den Jahren {2} 1908 – 1915 und 1919 bei Ihnen Harmonielehre, Kontrapunkt, Komposition und Klavier gelernt habe und daß Sie mir die Eignung, in all diesen Fächern zu unterrichten in vollstem Maasse zuerkennen. Wie weit Sie mich dabei hervorstreichen wollen muß ich Ihnen überlassen, es gilt dies Zeugnis gleichzeitig als Empfehlung an die Kommission, die mir (ich sende als Beilage noch meine gedruckten Kompositionen und meine Dissertation) die Eignung zuerkennen soll, da ich eben kein staatliches Zeugnis besitze.

The law, according to which every Austrian citizen who teaches music is legally obliged to register, is surely known to you. Now, as I do not have an official certificate, I ask you if you would be willing to write a testimonial for me, in which you merely have to confirm that, in the years 1908–15 and 1919, I {2} learned harmony, counterpoint, composition and piano, and that you judge me fit to teach all these subjects to their full extent. How much you want to go into detail about these is something that I must leave to you; this testimonial will also serve as a recommendation to the Commission, who ought to recognize my competence (I shall also send my published compositions, and my dissertation), since I actually have no official certificate.

{3} Hertha will collect the testimonial tomorrow (Saturday) at 9:30 in the morning.
