OC 54/324 - Typewritten picture postcard from Deutsch to Schenker, dated October 3, 1930
{recto}
[printed:] ⇧ Postkarte [picture: lake with mountains in background, captioned: “Gosausee–Dachstein, Oberösterr.”] [An:] ⇧ Herrn Dr. Heinrich Schenker Wien III. Keilgasse 8 {verso} ⇧ Wien, 3. Oktober 30 Lieber Verehrter! Bestens empfohlen ⇧ Ihr [signed:] O E Deutsch © Transcription William Drabkin, 2023 |

[printed:] ⇧ Postcard [picture: lake with mountains in background, captioned: “Gosausee–Dachstein, Upper Austria”] [To:] ⇧ Dr. Heinrich Schenker Keilgasse 8 Vienna III {verso} ⇧ Vienna, October 3, 1930 Dear revered friend, 1 According to the information that I have just received from Kremsier, 2 Nottebohm’s report is based on an error. 3 I therefore recommend changing the footnote, so that the report is mentioned, but adding that the [performance] material [for the “Eroica”] is not found among the musical items preserved in Kremsier. With best regards, ⇧ Your [signed:] O. E. Deutsch © Translation William Drabkin, 2023 |

Footnotes1 Receipt of this postcard is recorded in Schenker’s diary for October 4, 1930: “Von Deutsch (K.): Nottebohms Mitteilung beruhte auf einen Irrtum.” (“from Deutsch (postcard): Nottebohm’s communication was based on an error.”). 2 In his diary entry of September 26, Schenker recorded sending a postcard (not surviving) to Deutsch, asking him to make enquiries in Kremsier. 3 In the 1870s, Gustav Nottebohm received a note suggesting – erroneously – that there were authentic performance materials for the “Eroica” Symphony in Olmütz (Olomouc, Czech Republic). |
