OC B/176 - Handwritten letter from Albert Kopfermann (Königliche Bibliothek zu Berlin) to Schenker, dated November 18, 1913
⇧ KÖNIGLICHE BIBLIOTHEK ⇧ Musik-Abteilung ⇧ Berlin NW7, ⇧ 18. Nov.

⇧ ROYAL LIBRARY ⇧ Music Department ⇧ Berlin NW7, ⇧ November 18, ⇧ 191⇧ 3 ⇧ Dorotheenstraße 81 ⇧ Dear Dr. [Schenker], 1 I found your letter of yesterday most interesting. Meinert had not previously told me that he owned parts of the Sonata Op. 110 as well; he must have acquired them subsequently. Let us hope that they still remain accessible! As for the Ninth Symphony, 2 I estimate c. 420 pages to be photographed at 80g = c. 336 Marks. Perhaps this "mass copying" can be done at a reduced price; I have not yet had opportunity today to find out about that. 3 With my best wishes for every advance in your most interesting and valuable editions, 4 I remain, with kind regards,

Footnotes1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 1/13, p. 471, November 20, 1913: "Brief v. Kopfermann, liebenswürdig wie immer u. mehrere Bequemlichkeiten u. Vorteile gewährend." ("Letter from Koperfmann, kind as ever and granting several conveniences and advantages.") The diary (p. 470) also records Schenker's letter to Kopfermann of November 17, 1913, to which the present letter is the reply. 2 The autograph manuscript of the Ninth Symphony is Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Mus. ms. autogr. Beethoven Artaria 204/ Mus. ms. autogr. Beethoven 2. 3 "Vielleicht ... informieren" ("Perhaps ... about that"): pencilled vertical line, presumably in Schenker's hand, in left-hand margin. 4 Pencilled underlining, presumably in Schenker's hand. 5 Second underlining and exclamation mark pencilled, presumably in Schenker's hand. 6 "vielen ... Hand" ("many ... hand"): pencilled vertical line, presumably in Schenker's hand, in left-hand margin. 7 This copyist's manuscript is Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Mus. ms. autogr. Beethoven 30. 8 "diese ... können" ("Also ... Vienna"): two pencilled vertical lines, presumably in Schenker's hand, in left-hand margin. It is remarkable to see that Kopfermann was prepared to consider allowing this manuscript to travel from Berlin to Vienna on what today would be called an inter-library loan; Kopfermann's emphasis ("diese Handschrift . . . ") perhaps refers back to his reluctance to allow the autographs of Op. 110 and 111 "aus dem Hause" in October 1912 (OC B/179, above). |
