Venezia Fondamento S. Lorenzo 5046. Lieber Meister! 1 Wir sind vor dem nahenden „Heiligen Jahr“ 2 nach Venedig geflohen. Rom wurde immer unerträglicher, namentlich in den Preisen u. im Lärm. Hier hoffe ich Ruhe zur Arbeit zu haben. 2 Wochen war ich in Deutschland, um meine Zeitungs-Angelegenheiten zu ordnen – mit einigem Erfolg, sodass wir augenblicklich ohne unmittelbare Sorgen leben können. Von hier aus ist die Fahrt nach Wien nicht allzuweit; es ist meine Hoffnung, Sie bald einmal zu sehen. Lorenzo 5046 Dear Master, 1 We fled to Venice before the coming "Holy Year." 2 Rome became ever more unbearable, namely in the prices and in the noise. Here I hope to have the peace to work. For two weeks I was in Germany to take care of my newspaper matters – with some success, such that we can live for the moment without immediate worries. From here the trip to Vienna is not so far; it is my hope to see you soon once again. Footnotes1 Receipt of this postcard is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 3/7, p. 2753, November 13, 1924: "Von Dahms (K.): aus Venedig! Ist dem heiligen Jahr in Rom entflohen; seine Lage habe sich gebessert, er ladet nach Venedig ein „ohne Italiener“; hofft, einmal nach Wien kommen zu können." ("From Dahms (postcard): from Venice! Fled from the holy year in Rome; his situation has improved, he invites us to Venice "without Italians;" he hopes to be able to come to Vienna some time."). The postmark gives "December 8, 1924," but this must be incorrect. 2 1925 was declared a "Holy Year" by papal bull. 3 Schenker's reply is not known to survive; its writing is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 3/7, p. 2754, November 14, 1924: "An Dahms (K.): gratuliere zum Domizilwechsel; über die Einladung ließe sich reden; kündige das Heft an u. mache auf die wichtigsten Stellen aufmerksam. Verlasse die U.-E." ("To Dahms (postcard): I congratulate [him] on moving; we can talk about the invitation; I announce [publication of] the issue and draw his attention to the most important passages. I am leaving UE."). There is no mention of Dahms in the diary for December 1924. |
