¹ Receipt of this letter and the writing of a reply are recorded in Schenker’s diary for November 11, 1929: “Von Deutsch (K.): wurde an 2. Stelle, hinter Frau Dr. Kraus, vorgeschlagen, hat abgelehnt; möchte mich sprechen. – An Deutsch (K. expreß): auch ich habe den Wunsch, schlage morgen am Staatsfeiertag vor” (“From Deutsch (postcard): he was recommended in second place, behind Dr. Kraus, and declined; he would like to speak with me. – To Deutsch (express postcard): I too would like [to speak with him], suggest tomorrow, a national holiday”). — November 12 was Proclamation of the Republic Day, November 15 St. Leopold's Day.

² Schenker’s diary of October 21 records the writing of a letter to Deutsch, mainly about Hoboken: “Nach Tisch an Deutsch (Br.) 1. v. H. bringt die Honorarfrage vor das Kuratorium, – hat erst Dienstag zum erstenmal den Umfang der Vrieslander-Leistung gesehen; 2. Der Karten zum Philharmonischen Konzert hat v. H. trotz mehreren Gelegenheiten nicht mit einem Worte erwähnt – nun stelle ich ihn auf die Probe u. erzählte von den Karten durch Buxbaum – da rangen sich von seinen Lippen die Worte: ‘Schade, aber ich werde die Karten anbringen, vielleicht verkaufen[’]! 3. An op. 117^I werden wir nach bisherigen Erfahrung etwa 35 Stunden arbeiten, ich die meiste Zeit außer den Stunden. v. H. legt es auf den Betrug an, um sagen zu können, die Arbeit sei nicht so zeit-zehrend, in paar Stunden sei sie Vollbracht worden”
(“After lunch, to Deutsch (letter): (1) Hoboken will bring the matter of an honorarium to the Board of Trustees [of the Photogram Archive] – only on Tuesday did he recognize for the first time the scope of Vrieslander’s achievement. (2) Despite having had several opportunities, Hoboken did not once mention the tickets to the Philharmonic concert – now I have put him to the test and spoken about the ticket received through Buxbaum – his lips struggled to say: ‘What a shame; but I shall bring the tickets with me, perhaps to sell them’! (3) Reckoning from previous experiences, we shall spend about 35 hours working on [Brahms’s] Op. 117, No. 1, I for the most part outside the lessons; Hoboken tries to deceive me by being able to say that the work is not so time-consuming: in a few hours it will be finished”).
