Okt. 29 Lieber verehrter Herr Doktor! 1 Ihre Luftkarte vom 9. 2 war sehr betrüblich. Ich möchte Ihnen heute darauf nur sagen, dass auch ich die Kontinuität für notwendig halte. Prof. H. habe ich sogleich telefonisch verständigt. Während ich natürlich über die Sache schweige, glaubt er, sie doch nächstens zur Sprache bringen zu müssen. Aber auf einen Schuss wird er sich wohl so wenig wie auf jenes Schüsschen (Simrock) einlassen. Ueberrascht war ich auch von der Form „Hefte“, 3 was natürlich bei unregelmässigem Erscheinen noch weniger ansehnlich wäre. Nagel wird wohl nicht daran denken, die Zft. zu finanzieren. – An Haydn soll jetzt gearbeitet werden. Ist das schon Ihr guter Einfluss? © Transcription William Drabkin, 2023 |

I should like to tell you today that I do regard continuity as important. I have just notified Professor Haas by telephone. While I am naturally silent over the matter, he believes that it must be discussed soon. But he is probably as unlikely to get involved with a single push as he would with that little push (Simrock). I was also surprised by the expression “booklets”, 3 which would naturally be even less appropriate because of their irregular publication. Nagel would probably not think of financing the periodical. – Work on Haydn is about to begin. Is that a sign of your good influence? © Translation William Drabkin, 2023 |

H. gewiß nicht zustimmen” (“From Deutsch (postcard): Hass will certainly not approve of Hoboken”). 2 Schenker’s postcard of October 9 (not surviving) reports a conversation with Hoboken: “An Deutsch (K. expreß): Bericht über die gestrige Unterredung; erkläre: v. H. die Haupt- u. Mitarbeit überlassen, ihn dunsten lassen!” (“To Deutsch (express postcard): report of yesterday’s conversation; I decree: leave the principal and collaborative work to Hoboken, let him be kept waiting!”). 3 The term Hefte (booklets) for the publication associated with the Photogram Archive probably appears in Schenker’s postcard of October 9; Deutsch may be thinking of the first six Tonwille “Hefte”, which appeared at irregular intervals. |
