Lieber verehrter Herr Doktor! 1

Obzwar ich am Dienstag mit den hier tagenden Bibliophilen einen Ausflug nach Schloss Ernstbrunn 2 machen sollte, habe ich mich aus mehreren Gründen entschlossen, darauf zu verzichten, und hoffe, dass ich mich frei machen kann. Wenn ich Ihnen also nicht bis spätestens Dienstag vormittag eine andere Mitteilung zukommen lasse, so erwarte ich Sie gerne um 3 Uhr nachmittags in der Bibliothek. 3 Das Haus ist jetzt vollkommen ungastlich und wir werden also die Jause auswärts einnehmen müssen. Ich habe bis etwa 7 Uhr Zeit, weil ich um 9 Uhr umgezogen zu einem Empfang in die Deutschen Gesandtschaft gehen muss.

Dear, revered Dr. [Schenker], 1

Although I am supposed to make an excursion to Castle Ernstbrunn 2 on Tuesday, with the bibliophiles who are meeting here, I have decided for several reasons to forgo this; and I hope that I can make myself free. If I haven’t gotten another message to you by Tuesday morning at the latest, then I shall be happy to await you in the library at 3 in the afternoon. 3 The house is at present completely inhospitable, and we shall have to take our afternoon snack outside. I have time until about 7 o’clock, as I have to go – dressed up – to a reception at the German embassy at 9 o’clock.

1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker’s diary for September 29, 1928: “Von Deutsch (Br.): wenn er nicht absagt, wird er mich am 2. X. erwarten” (“From Deutsch (letter): if he does not cancel, he will expect me on October 2”).

2 Schloss Ernstbrunn: a castle situated above the village of Dörfles, about 40 km north of Vienna.

3 This meeting was prompted by Schenker’s request (postcard of September 27, which is not known to survive) to meet with Hoboken and see the “archive” – by which he must have meant Hoboken’s private library. — The meeting is recorded in Schenker’s diary for October 2: “Nach Tisch zu Hoboken; Deutsch erwartet mich. Vor allem erledigt er seine Nottebohm-Sorgen mit meiner Hilfe u. fordert mir ein Gutachten über die Echtheit der Sonaten-Erstdrucke der Beethoven Sonaten ab. Um ihm die Schwierigkeit der betreffenden Fragen vom rein künstlerischen Standpunkt zu zeigen, verweise ich als Beispiel auf Chopin op. 10 I . Leider fehlen in der Sammlung die Londoner u. Pariser Erstdrucke. Bülows Ausgabe der Etüden, die ich bisher nicht gekannt, haben mich entsetzt. Nun habe ich zum Schluß meinerseits einen Vorstoß gemacht in der Richtung der Urlinie-Sammlung im Rahmen des Hoboken-Archivs. ”
(“After lunch, to Hoboken's; Deutsch awaits me. First of all, he solves his Nottebohm problems with my help and demands of me to vouchsafe the authenticity of the first editions of the Beethoven sonatas. To show him the difficulty of the questions at hand from a purely artistic standpoint, I refer him to the example of Chopin's Op. 10, No. 1. Unfortunately, the London and Paris first editions are missing from the collection. Bülow's edition of the Etudes, which I did not know previously, astonished me. Now I have, to conclude, made a start for my part towards the Urlinie collection within the framework of the Hoboken Archive.”).
