In dieser Ausgabe sind auch die Nachweise gedruckt. Man muss übrigens dort Alles (jedes Wort und jede Note) neuerlich überprüfen. Denn die erw[ähnte] Ausgabe macht der Akademie keine Ehre. Sie werden Besseres liefern. ³ Wollen Sie selbst auf die {3} Suche nach den Vorlagen (Autographen, korrigierten Abschriften, alten Ausgaben) ausgehen, so fangen Sie ja selbstverständlich beim alten Nottebohm an. Finde ich etwas über Besitzverschiebungen, so teile ich’s Ihnen mit, aber erst im Herbst. Jetzt stecke ich mitten in anderen Arbeiten, die mich {4} wohl auf Monate festhalten werden.

My reply to your letter of inquiry ¹ will be very brief, because I remind you that the search-effort for the manuscripts of the Beethoven sonatas was carried out a short time ago, {2} when the Urtext edition of the Berlin Academy ² was undertaken. The references are also published in that edition. One must, incidentally, re-examine everything (each word and each note) found therein. For the edition in question is not a credit to the Academy. You will improve on it. ³ If you yourself want to start with an {3} examination of the sources (autographs, revised prints, early editions), you will certainly begin with the old Nottebohm. If I discover something regarding changes in ownership, I will let you know, but not before autumn. At present I am detained by other tasks, which will {4} probably keep me busy for months.
