Ich bin plötzlich von einem heftigen Rheumatismus befallen und kann den Kopf nicht drehen. Da ich die Erscheinung ausserdem für ein[e] Aeusserung der herrschenden Grippe halte, ziehe ich es vor heute nicht auszugehen und infolgedessen nicht zu Ihnen zu kommen. Hoffentlich ist es am nächsten Dienstag wieder besser.

I have suddenly come down with a bad case of rheumatism and cannot turn my head. Since I regard the condition moreover as a manifestation of the influenza that is going around, I prefer not to go out today and thus not to come to you. Let us hope it will again be better next Tuesday.

1 Receipt of this letter is not recorded in Schenker's diary. "Next Tuesday" was February 5, for which Hoboken receives no mention in the diary. However, Schenker met with him on the 4th and again on the 6th, meetings that are summarized in the diary.
