OJ 12/7, 2 - Handwritten notecard from Kalbeck to Schenker, dated May 21, 1897
© Transcription William Pastille, 2022 |
Just in a rush immediately before departure, my warmest thanks for your quite excellent essays, which have altogether captivated and engrossed me. {verso} I hope the Lienau-Schlesinger project 1 has not fallen through together with the dress rehearsal. © Translation William Pastille, 2022 |

Footnotes1 Robert Lienau (1838–1920), German music publisher, took over the music publishing firm of Adolf Schlesinger in 1863. His son, Robert Heinrich Lienau (1866–1949), inherited the firm in 1898. The existence of a letter from Lienau jnr to Schenker dated 1897 (OJ 12/39, [1]) suggests that the “project” might have had something to do with Schenker’s search for a publisher; however, none of Schenker’s compositions were published by Lienau-Schlesinger, and Lienau’s letter is on the letterhead of the music publisher Carl Haslinger. |
