Footnotes1 The relationship between the calling card and the envelope is determined by June 3 being a Thursday, hence 1897. Schenker’s diary for May 31, 1897 records: “Zurück aus Deutschland, ‒ vom Ausflug aus Mannheim (Tonkünstlerfest) Frankfurt, Heidelberg u.s.w. […]” (“Back from trip to Germany, ‒ from Mannheim (composers' festival) Frankfurt, Heidelberg etc. […]”). 2 Schenker first wrote “Donnerstag Nachmittag” (“Thursday afternoon”), then realized that their meeting would be in the following week, so added “3. Juni” (“June 3”) in the margin to clarify. 3 The musical phrase entered above is unidentified. However, another phrase from ostensibly the same piece in the same key, meter, and motion, is quoted in Schenker’s hand on the envelope OJ 6/3, [6], May 8, 1899. Its placement there, on the line that would normally contain the designation “Komponist” (“Composer”) or “Tonkünstler” (“Musician”), suggests that the work was by Violin himself. |
