Footnotes

1 Year given in postmark. Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 2/1, pp. 156‒157, March 10, 1916: "Brief von Dr. Kammerer gleichzeitig von Karpath: K.: Mittelmann stehe Einstellung des Verfahrens bezw. Ueberweisung des Aktes an das Polizei Kommissariat bevor." (Letter from Dr. Kammerer, simultaneously postcard from Karpath: Mittelmann is close to his case being dismissed or transferred to the Police Commissioner's office."). During the remainder of March, the following entries appear in the diary: OJ 2/1, p. 165, March 18, 1916: "Von Mittelmann (K.): Einstellung des Verfahrens; dankt für die Hilfe u. kündigt Brief oder Besuch an." ("From Mittelmann (postcard): dismissal of the case; thanks me for my help and promises a letter or visit.").

2 Confirmation of Mittelmann's release comes in an entry in Schenker's diary dated March 20, 1916 (OJ 2/1, p. 168), describing a meeting with Mittelmann in a coffee-house, at which the latter recounts his experiences during detention and expresses his resolve now to find an apartment for himself. (In fact Mittelmann remained at the Wurlitzergasse address until 1931.)
