Footnotes

1 Dating: the only years in this period in which March 10 was a Friday were 1911, 1916, and 1933. Since Mandyczewski died in 1929, and Schenker had not yet begun his archival work on Beethoven sources by March 1911, 1916 is the likely date.

Receipt of this postcard is not recorded in Schenker's diary for 1916; however, OJ 2/1, p. 157, records for March 10, 1916: Ins Archiv; rev. Abschr. der Eroica, 1 Satz bis zur Reprise (Siehe kl. Bibl.) ("To the Archive: revised copy of the "Eroica" first movement as far as the Recapitulation (see Little Library). Strikingly meticulous over key signatures; less so is the care in the bowing marks; also, the staccato strokes are very important to Beethoven. Several corrections are of great, nay of greatest significance."). This is preceded at OJ 2/1, p. 152, March 4, 1916, by: "An Mandyczewski (Br.): ersuche mir Einblick in die rev. Abschr. der Eroica zu gestatten." ("To Mandyczewski (letter): I ask to be allowed to inspect the revised copy of the "Eroica".")
