OJ 12/9, [22] - Handwritten postcard from Karpath to Schenker, dated July 18, 1918
{recto}
[all in a decorative rule-frame]
[An: ] Herrn Dr Heinrich Schenker Wien III Reisnerstraße 38 [postmark:] || [illeg] | 19. Herzlichst grüßt Ihr [signed:] Karpath © Transcription Ian Bent, 2010 |

[To: ]Dr. Heinrich Schenker, Vienna III, Reisnerstraße 38 [postmark:] || [illeg] | 19. VII. 18 – 1 | * 3a * || {verso} Aschau, Post Aigen-Voglhub, nr. Bad Ischl, July 18, 1918 Dear friend, Sadly, 1 your letter reached me too late, viz. yesterday, July 17. 2 I would certainly have written the obituary in the spirit that you suggest, only it is now all water under the bridge. Perhaps the opportunity will arise during the winter to make up for what was neglected. I have always maintained that one ought not to die in Vienna during the summer. With cordial greetings, Yours, [signed:] Karpath © Translation Ian Bent, 2010 |

Footnotes1 Receipt of this postcard is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 2/11, p. 922, July 20, 1918: " Von Karpath (K.): habe meinen Brief zu spät erhalten, werde vielleicht im Winter Gelegenheit finden zurückzukommen." ("From Karpath (postcard): he received my card too late, and will find an opportunity to return perhaps in winter."). 2 Schenker's letter is not known to survive, but its writing is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 2/11, p. 912, July 3, 1918: " fasse aus Eigenem den Entschluss, den ich auch der Familie mitteile, an Karpath einen Expreßbrief zu richten, um ihm Anhaltspunkte für eine halbwegs gerechte Würdigung des Dahingegangenen zu ermöglichen [Eduard Gärtner] ..." ("Of my own accord I resolve to send an express letter to Karpath, a decision I also communicate to the family, in order to give him advice about how to facilitate a halfway fitting tribute to the deceased [Eduard Gärtner] …"). The next day (p. 913), Schenker records: "Mittelmann im Caféhaus: erfahre von ihm, daß Karpath in Aschau weile ..." ("Mittelmann in the coffee-house: I hear from him that Karpath[DPe Karpath, Ludwig] is staying at Aschau …"). |
