Anbei die Abrechnung, deren verspätete Einsendung ich zu entschuldigen bitte. Meine Abreise wird viel später erfolgen, als ursprünglich beabsichtigt, weil ich einige Verträge noch durchzukämpfen habe. Mein Bub wird Dich fragen, ob Du ihm noch eine zweite Stunde geben kannst. 2 Kontrapunkt besitzt u. studiert er. 3 Auf meine Frage, warum er bei Dir nichts redet, sagte er, dass es ihm schade um die Zeit, die er bei Dir lieber mit dem Hören ausfüllt. Er wird sich hoffentlich machen. Nächsten Mittwoch komme ich an Euch, wenn Ihr nicht absagt. © Transcription Ian Bent, 2023 |

My trip will take place much later than originally envisioned, because I have some contracts to plough my way through My son will ask you whether you can give him a second lesson. 2 He possesses and studies counterpoint. 3 In response to my question as to why he remains silent [during his lessons with you], he said that it is a shame about the time, which he would rather fill by listening to what you have to say. Footnotes1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Heinrich’s diary for January 28, 1928: “Von Mozio (Br.): endlich die Abrechnung: setzt die Zinsen auf 8½% herunter.” (“From Mozio (letter): finally the account: he is lowering the interest to 8½%.”) – the accompanying account is not preserved with the letter, so this entry gives us information not contained in the letter. — Where Moriz places an en- or emdash, a paragraph-break has been editorially inserted. 2 “Du ihm ... kannst” (“whether ... lesson”) underlined in crayon by Heinrich. 3 Georg had embarked on two-voice counterpoint in first species on October 1, 1927, had completed fifth species by the beginning of December, and had begun three-voice counterpoint on January 7, 1928 (lessonbook 1927/28). The phrase “eine zweite Stunde” must mean two lessons per week, i.e. doubling the frequency; however, the lessonbook shows that Georg continued to have just one lesson a week, on Mondays. |
