Hitler {4} wird zwar über Österreich zu Mussolini fliegen, aber aus Österr. ist er längst hinausgeflogen. Ob nicht auch in Deutschland seine Wochen gezählt sind?

Sonntag Abend war Furtwängler bei uns, ³ hat offen die Niederlage der „N-Z.“ ⁴ u. Deutschl. zugegeben, den Abfall des Volkes u.s.w. Mündlich werde ich das hierhergehörige nachtragen. F. will uns im Sommer besuchen, da er vor hat mit dem Auto, das er selber lenkt, eine Erholungsreise durch Österr. zu machen.

Wir fahren aufs Geradewohl nach Böckstein bei Bad Gastein (im Salzburgischen), wo wir erst Umschau halten wollen. ⁵ Vom Platz, den wir einnehmen wollen, werde ich Ihnen sofort die Adresse zur Verfügung stellen.

On Saturday afternoon the journey took place that you had suggested to Grinzing and your property. Mr. and Mrs. Schmid picked us up and took us out. The place is splendid; everything has the aroma of real "country" – a country of the present, as also still of that actual country from the epoch of Beethoven and Schubert. The view of the Danube, of the Leopoldsberg and Kahlenberg is similarly full of the present, {2} but also of the past; in short: there one breathes an organicism of today and former times so clearly as if time stood still. To you and your esteemed wife on this occasion all the more, the best wishes for this, I would say, soul-rich possession! We were all four in a very happy frame of mind because of what we had enjoyed, indeed downright childishly exuberant; then the architect led us onto the Kobenzl, ² where we took tea in the best conceivable mood. That is how beautifully your suggestion worked out, for which we always send most heartfelt thanks!

In the hellish heat of the past weeks came the most strenuous work {3} of writing down on innumerable pages the instructions for the engraver or lithographer, to save them unnecessary errors, at the same time marking the proofs for the new impression of my large collected edition of the piano sonatas of Beethoven (4 volumes).

But now we are really at the end with our physical wits, and look forward to the first gulp of mountain air after two summers in the dungeon-air of the depths.

In Holland you are certainly (as always) better informed about happenings in the world, also about those in Germany, Austria, etc., therefore I can skip marginal notes on the events. Hitler {4} will certainly fly over Austria to Mussolini, but as to out of Austria: he was long ago thrown out. Could his weeks be numbered even in Germany?

Sunday evening Furtwängler stopped by, ³ openly conceded the defeat of the „N Z“ ⁴ and Germany, the defection of the people etc. I will recount these matters orally. Furtwängler wants to visit us in the summer, since he plans to make a vacation trip through Austria by car, which he himself drives.

We are leaving immediately for Böckstein near Bad Gastein (in the Salzburg province), where we will first survey the situation. ⁵ I will immediately send you the address of the quarters we choose to occupy.
