Most highly revered [friend], 1

I was highly delighted at your friendly communication ‒ and equally delighted by your Syrian (why the disguise?) Dances , which I have played through frequently and successfully with good musicians and pianists.

These pieces have a touch of genius to them. 2

{2} The major tasks that I have confronted lately (they can be seen from the programs), the birth of a child, and the loss of my best friend Nováček to death 3 have all virtually simultaneously rained down ‒ indeed, thundered down ‒ on me, and have thrown me into utter confusion. Hence the delay in writing.

{3} My warmest thanks to you and most cordial greetings.

In highest esteem, your
