OJ 6/3, [14] - Handwritten letter from Schenker to Moriz Violin, dated April 5, 1900
In urgent need of sleep this evening, my very honorable brother, who slept badly last night, is relinquishing his ticket for the guided tour of the Brahms monument plinth. 1 Now Brahms gets up even without his help. {2} Would you or anyone else among your family or friends like to be present? Isolated as I am, 2 even the giving away of tickets is troublesome. © Translation Ian Bent, 2022 |

Footnotes1 Guided tour of the plinth of the Brahms monument in the Vienna Resselpark (in the Karlsplatz): the plinth has a sculpture showing Terpsichore as the muse of the lyric chorus, with her lyre. Brahms sits high above her, contemplating her as she plays her lyre. — Since the design of the sculptor Rudolf Weyr was not selected over those of two other sculptors until 1902, and the monument not finished and unveiled until 1908, the pencilled date of this letter is in conflict with the chronology of the monument plinth. 2 Perhaps suggesting Schenker was writing from out of town. |
