Sehr unglücklich war ich Sie verfehlt zu haben. Morgen Mittag sind aus wir mit Brahms [illeg. word] eingeladen u. Vormittags habe ich Probe. Würde es Ihnen am 5 Uhr passen? Und hier im Hotel? Wir können ja dann das Weitere {verso} verabreden. Leider ist meine Zeit hier wieder sehr knapp. Vielleicht können wir auch nach dem Concert zusammen sein? 1

I was very unlucky to have missed you. Tomorrow lunchtime we are invited to Brahms [illeg. word], and in the morning I have a rehearsal. Would it suit you at 5 o’clock? And here in the hotel? We will then be able to {verso} arrange something further. Unfortunately, my time here is again very tight. Perhaps we could get together after the concert? 1

1 There is no indication in Schenker’s diary as to whether the men met on this occasion; however, for February 7, 1897 it records: “D’Albert spielt die Variationen meiner Fantasie à vista (Hotel Bristol) Der Künstler selbst eine unvollendete Persönlichkeit: es fehlt ihm zum großen Künstler, zum großen Menschen ... gedämpfte Erscheinung.” (“D’Albert plays the variations from my Fantasy at sight (Hotel Bristol). The artist himself has an unfullfilled personality: he lacks what it takes to be a great artist, a great human ... [he is] a muted figure.”). — Schenker’s Fantasie, Op. 2, for piano, was published by Breitkopf & Härtel copyright date 1898, released January 1899, dedicated to Ferruccio Busoni, and also to Moriz Violin.
