Footnotes

1 This letter must date from November 13 or shortly after, 1905. Schenker’s attendance of the première of d’Albert’s opera Flauto solo in Prague on November 12 can be inferred from paragraph 2 in conjunction with that in paragraph 1 regarding Cotta, despite the absence of any record in Schenker’s diary.

2 D’Albert had written to J. G. Cotta of Stuttgart a letter of recommendation of Schenker’s Harmonielehre on November 13, 1905 on the basis of which Cotta accepted the work (OJ 9/31, [2], Cotta to d’Albert, November 14, and (OJ 9/31, [3], Cotta to Schenker, November 15). Cotta had initially rejected Schenker’s proposal (CA 1-2, November 8; OJ 9/31, [1], November 9).

3 Piano recital by Eugen d’Albert in the Bösendorfer Recital Hall, the program comprising sonatas by Beethoven, Brahms, Weber, and the Liszt B minor Sonata. The reference to Hartmann is unexplained.
