— The departure of the director's widow seems to have been postponed, and indeed on account of a visit which, in view of her widowed status, seems to be not without significance. — As it has become customary in the world of public administration, the privy councilor escorts the general. The widow was missing, she seemed to be indisposed; {389} yet the privy councilor condescendingly sent the general's greetings. — In place of the German couple, a family of five from Vienna comes into the guests' lounge – a troop of soldiers, to judge from the noise they made, although the organization comprises only a malformed father, an older mother, and three very slender girls. The troop marches in and leaves without offering a greeting. One of the daughters seems to have a taste even for better music; one can gather this at least from the classical snippets that she volunteers – usually at a late hour after supper, to our regret. From this girl I finally heard, for the first time, how the beautiful rhythm in Brahms's Op. 117, No. 1, is conceived in incompetent heads: the fundamental tone appeared each time on the strong beat, and the girl doesn't seem to realize in the slightest that it could or even should be otherwise. In the tuition that I give to my pupils, I am regularly accustomed to describing the Philistine sensibility that Brahms so ingeniously bypasses, although I had hitherto never heard it myself. Now I heard it for the first time in the flesh. ² —
