Freiheit hochhält u. der angelsächsischen, die dem Götzen des Geldes verfallen ist. In einem Telegramm erklärt der deutsche Kaiser sich glücklich, an der Spitze des tüchtigsten Volkes der Erde zu stehen! Ueber Frankreich fällt Gott sei Dank kein Wort – dessen Rolle ist ausgespielt. — Vor drei Jahren hätte eine Offensive dieser Art den Krieg sicher abzukürzen vermögen!

— From Dahms for my 50th birthday article in the Konservative Monatsschrift. ¹ To the Finance Office for the tobacco rations card, have to leave again though because of the massive demand. — From Sophie (letter): gives notice of a package for the 19th, Hans, too, will be sending something, prepares a bill and reports that Dr. Hilsenrad, who in the meantime has risen to district judge, will secure a loan for them of 20 – 30,000 Kronen. — Sent Mrs. Anna about the statue with as yet unknown result. — Austrian offensive makes advances. — Suddenly and to the greatest dismay of the population bread has been reduced to half a loaf per head per week; that the government has let it come to this is really unforgivable. — On the occasion of the thirty-year anniversary of the reign Hindenburg and the German Emperor give speeches at the headquarters, that finally finally [sic] after such a long time lead to a "word offensive": Hindenburg notes that the English Prime Minister has had the audacity etc. and the German Emperor expresses {904} demonstrably his conviction that he has seen the world war from the very beginning as a battle of two world-views, between the Prussian-Germanic, which prizes honor, tradition and freedom, and the Anglo-Saxon, which has fallen prey to the false god of money. In a telegram the German Emperor declares himself fortunate to be standing at the head of the most capable people on earth! Thankfully, nothing is said about France – its role is finished. — Three years ago an offensive of this kind would certainly have been able to shorten the war!
