From 1922, Pernter was secretary to the Austrian Minister for Education, 1932‒34 he headed the art section of the Federal Theater (Bundestheater), 1934‒36 he was made secretary in the Federal Ministry for Education, and 1936‒38 was appointed Federal Minister for Education. During World War II he was deported first to Dachau then to Mauthausen. After the war, he returned to the Ministry for Education.
