The largest city in the Slovenian region of Lower Styria [Niedersteiermark], 55 km (c. 35 miles) south-south-east of Graz, approx. 190 km (c. 120 miles) south-south-west of Vienna. It formed part of Austria until 1918, when Lower Styria under the Treaty of St. Germain was assigned to the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes; reattached to Austria during World War II, it was assigned to Yugoslavia after 1945, and since the break-up of the latter to Slovenia.
