¹ Receipt of this picture postcard, and response, are recorded in Schenker’s diary for November 27, 1934: “Von Deutsch (K.): es bleibt bei meiner Fassung des Schubert-Liedes. — An Deutsch (K.): werde zuhören.” (“From Deutsch (postcard): they are sticking with my version of the Schubert song. — To Deutsch (postcard): I shall listen.”).

² Schenker’s diary for November 28, 1934 records simply: “Das Schubert-Lied im Rundfunk.” (“The Schubert song on the radio.”). — On September 25, 1934, the Austrian radio corporation (RAVAG), at Deutsch’s suggestion, organized a competition whereby a suitable text for an untexted Schubert song was sought. As the song was also unfinished, it was first completed by Schenker (see Otto Erich Deutsch, "Ein Preissauschreiben der RAVAG. Ein Schubert-Lied ohne Worte," Radio Wien , No. 52, September 21, 1934, 10th year, pp. 6, 13, 20). The competition was won by Prisca Maria Mader (see diary entry for November 20). Her winning text was published in Radio Wien under the pseudonym Mary Mahler; it was performed on the radio by Josef Hueber, with an introduction by Deutsch ("Ergebnis des Preisausschreibens: Ein Dichter zu einem unbekannten Schubertlied gesucht," Radio Wien , No. 9, November 23, 1934, 11th year, p. 48).

³ This is the last surviving written communication from Deutsch to Heinrich Schenker. Beyond this, we know from Schenker’s diary that on December 8 and again by telephone on December 24 Deutsch invited Heinrich and Jeanette to listen to a performance of Schubert’s incomplete Symphony in E major completed by Felix Weingartner, and that the Schenkers had Otto Erich and Hanna Deutsch for a “festive afternoon snack” on December 28. Thereafter, two letters survive from Otto Erich to Jeanette Schenker: OJ 10/3, [219], July 7, 1935, and OJ 10/3, [220], May 3, 1939.
