PROF. OTTO ERICH DEUTSCH
WIEN II.
Böcklinstraße 26
5. XI. 30

Lieber Verehrter! 1

Bestens empfohlen
Ihr sehr ergebener

Dear revered friend, 1

Forgive me for being unable to reply more quickly this time. 2

I recommend that you send Der Kunstwart a sample from among the proof corrections straightaway, if possible one that can be understood without the Urlinie graphs. 3

For the copy of the letters from Berlin, 4 which I should like to present in an advantageous place, I offer my best thanks for the time being.

Please tell me when you would like to come to the library; I shall arrange my schedule accordingly.

With best regards,
Your very devoted

Footnotes

1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker’s diary for November 6, 1930: “Von Deutsch (Br.): überläßt mir die Stunde vorzuschlagen; genügt es, an Dr. Rinn Korrekturbogen zu schicken?” (“From Deutsch (letter): he leaves it to me to decide the time; will it suffice to send proof sheets to Dr. Rinn?”).

(“To Deutsch (letter): at his request, I enclose the letter from Kestenberg for the second time; I passed on his suggestions to Röder word for word. How should I deal with Rinn with regard to a pre-print copy: should I send the page proofs or the work [itself]? I am prepared to return all sorts of Hobokeniana to his library; when?).

3 It seems as if Schenker was hoping to have an extract of his “Eroica” analysis published in Der Kunstwart; he was in discussions about this with its editor, Hermann Rinn. The idea was not carried through, but Otto Vrieslander reviewed the third Meisterwerk yearbook for Rinn’s journal.

4 Letters written by Leo Kestenberg to Hans Weisse extolling Schenker’s theories and their value for musical practice (OJ 71/20, [1] and OJ 71/20, [2], July 15 and August 4, 1930).
