Lieber Verehrter! 1

Dear revered friend, 1

Only one thing oppresses me now: I must be at the Konzerthaus on Friday, at 7:30, as Weingartner’s return engagement in Vienna is important for my Basel newspaper. I could stay only until 7:15. 2 If you do not say no to me, out of consideration for the other guests, then I shall still come.

Your very devoted
[signed:] O. E. Deutsch

My wife has already heard Weisse’s sextet.

Footnotes

1 Receipt of this postcard is recorded in Schenker’s diary for December 4, 1930: “Von Deutsch (K.): bittet um Entschuldigung, wenn er wegen Weingartner’s Konzert, richtiger wegen der Baseler Zeitung, früher weggehen muß.” (“From Deutsch (postcard): he apologizes for having to leave early on account of Weingartner’s concert or, rather, on account of the Basel newspaper”.).

2 Schenker had invited a group of friends and pupils for Friday, December 5 to hear Hans Weisse speak about Schenker’s theories in advance of Weisse’s lectures at the Central Institute for Music Pedagogy in Berlin. Schenker’s diary for that day includes a lengthy account of the talk and the attendees. The lecture lasted from 6.30 to 9.15.
