Footnotes

1 Receipt of this postcard is recorded in Schenker’s diary for February 5, 1931: “Von Deutsch (K.): werden am 15. gegen 5h erscheinen.” (“From Deutsch (postcard): they will appear on the 15th, towards 5 o’clock.”).

2 The occasion is recorded in Schenker’s diary: “Lie-Liechen macht Vorbereitungen für die Jause (O. E. Deutsch). — 5–¾9h Herr u. (“Lie-Liechen makes preparations for the afternoon snack (O. E. Deutsch). — From 5 to 8:45, Mr. and Mrs. Deutsch; he brings me an offprint about Haslinger’s collected [Beethoven] edition; I lend him The Rotarian, and Benz. I learn from him that Hoboken had intended to work on the Lully edition as contributor of the thoroughbass [realizations], that he displays the most churlish manners here in Vienna in contrast to Berlin, Munich, etc. Perhaps Deutsch’s best performance was his portrayal of Brünauer as a purveyor of candy.”).
