Aber er will betonen, dass die Sammlung für ihn geboren wurde und lebt, solange sie ihm dienen kann.

Or wanted to? I did not go into it any further, since the alternative seemed more important to me: the housing [of his library]. ² And so he wants in this way to have a one-sided contract of the sort that is possible for a forwarding agent: Hoboken can give notice at any time, but the lessor cannot: he has to fit in (with Hoboken, that is).

In this connection I should like to mention, too, that the Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments can not only place his collection under protection (whereby it cannot be sold to someone in, or taken to, a foreign country), but would again lead only to a packing depot for an indefinite period. Otherwise the state can take a 10% export duty from the value of such objects, reckoned individually or collectively; indeed it must, sensibly, now that this has finally become law. You should not have any faith in his future work (comparative study of [musical] texts); and in any event even these –a work by Chopin every year – would be buried for the general public.
