Lieber Verehrter! 1

Dear revered friend, 1

In Cäcilia , published by Schott in Mainz, which brought out the first edition of the Ninth Symphony, among other things, there appeared at the end of 1826 a table with Beethoven’s metronome markings (vol. 6, Nos 21–22, p. 158) and, at the beginning of 1827, a list of misprints (vol. 6, No. 23, supplement) to the Ninth Symphony. In case you do not know about these, I hope that you will find them useful.

Best wishes, your

Footnotes

1 Receipt of this postcard is recorded in Schenker’s diary for May 30, 1933: “Von Deutsch (K.): ein Exemplar der Nationalzeitung mit meinem Aufsatz.” (“From Deutsch (postcard): a copy of the National-Zeitung with my essay.”).

2 The National Socialists closed the paper for a short time in 1933, apparently on account of an article that enraged Adolf Hitler.

3 Deutsch is jokingly referring to Schenker’s article "Was wird aus der Musik?," which was published in the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung on April 28, before the ban was issued.

4 Possibly Furtwängler’s recent address on Brahms, given in Vienna on May 16 and published twelve days later in the Neue Freie Presse .
