Wien, 18. Dez. 33

Lieber Verehrter! 1

Ihre Newyorker Sendung 6 erwarte ich gern.

Herzlichst ergeben Ihr

[To:] Dr. H. Schenker
Keilgasse 8
Vienna III {verso}
Vienna, December 18, 1933

Dear revered friend, 1

Many thanks for your advice. 2 The matter will, at any rate, hardly be settled before the New Year.

Please give the Schumann clipping to Hoboken, or send it to him, likewise my new Schubert article ([on] poison), 3 if you do not need to keep it: I do not have an extra copy for Hoboken.

Regarding the land, I have heard nothing further; a decision is to be made tomorrow. 4 I shall not be the first to say anything about this insufficient plot

Two articles that are relevant to you are about to appear: “Viennese Musicians’ Fees in the Past 200 Years” and “Material and Ideal Copyright”. 5

I keenly await the piece about you from New York. 6

Most cordially, your devoted

Footnotes

(“From Deutsch (postcard): ‘The matter will hardly be settled before the New Year’!! At any rate, more quickly than it would be of benefit to me”). — Schenker has twice inserted a hyphen then proceeded to a new topic. Paragraph-breaks have been editorially inserted at these points.

2 Schenker’s diary entry for December 14 records the writing of a letter offering advice on possible course topics to be taught at the Vienna Academy, suggesting that they include a visit to Hoboken’s library and the Photogram Archive: “An Deutsch (Br.): bezeichne die Themen, die zu Anfang in Frage käme; empfehle den Besuch der Erstdrucksammlung u. des Archivs” (“To Deutsch (letter): I indicate the topics that first come to mind, recommend a visit to the collection of first editions and the Archive”).

3 "Schubert vergiftet!," Allgemeine Musikzeitung, November 17, 1933, 566–67.

4 This probably refers to Hoboken’s plan to build a villa in Vienna which would house his library of first editions.

5 "Wiener Musikhonorare seit 200 Jahren," Tagespost (Graz), December 31, 1933, reprinted in the Neues Wiener Tagblatt , January 12, 1934. The article on copyright has not been traced.
