Dear Dr. [Schenker], 1

I have just studied your article in Der Kunstwart 2 alongside the collected edition and have determined that about a third of the mistakes are also found in the collected edition. When you have a chance, could you please tell me which edition you consulted? 3

With best greetings
Your very devoted

Footnotes

1 Receipt of this postcard is recorded in Schenker’s diary for March 28, 1929: “Von Deutsch (K.): wegen Schuberts Hm-Menuett: welchen Verlag ich in dem Kunstwart-Aufsatz meine” (“From Deutsch (postcard): with regard to Schubert’s Minuet in B minor, which publisher did I refer to in the article in Der Kunstwart?”).

2 "Eine Rettung der klassischen Musik-Texte," Der Kunstwart, 42/1 (October 1928–March 1929), pp. 359–367.

3 . In the article, Schenker does not specify which edition of the Schubert sonata he has reproduced, writing: “The name of the publisher is irrelevant, it suffices to know that it is a global publisher and that the edition is in current use today.” But his reply to Deutsch is recorded in the diary for March 29: “An Deutsch (K.): Ausgabe Peters; Erinnerung meines Briefwechsels mit Peters wegen der Beethoven-Sonaten.” (“To Deutsch (postcard): the Peters edition; recollection of my correspondence with Peters concerning the Beethoven sonatas.”).
