Sehr geehrter Herr Professor! 1 Ich schreibe in aller Eile zwei Stunden vor Beginn meines Konzertes. Soeben komme ich von Straube, in dem ich einen ganz ausserordentlichen Menschen kennenlernte. Im Laufe des Gesprächs frug er mich, „wie auch Dr. Schenker im Falle einer Berufung nach Leipzig dazu Stellung nehmen würde, ob er die Absicht habe, von Wien wegzugehen[“] u.s.w. Ich habe selbst-verständlich rein subjektiv geantwortet und werde darüber noch schreiben. Mein Spiel machte auf ihn einen aufrichtig grossen Eindruck und ich glaube damit einen grossen Schritt hinsichtlich meiner {recto} äusseren Carriere gemacht zu haben. I have just come from seeing Straube, whom I have come to know as an altogether extraordinary man. In the course of the conversation, he asked me “what stand would Dr. Schenker take in the event of an invitation to come to Leipzig, whether he is minded to move from Vienna,” etc. I, of course, answered purely subjectively, and will write further on the matter. My playing made a really strong impression on him, and I believe I have taken a big step with regard to my {recto} professional career. Footnotes1 This postcard is misfiled among the items from Felix Salzer to Schenker, in folder OJ 14/1. — Receipt of this postcard is recorded in Schenker's diary for February 21, 1921: "Von Hupka (K. aus Leipzig): Kritik vernichtend, nur Straube einverstanden „entzückt“; erkundigt sich, ob ich nach Leipzig kommen wollte." ("From Hupka (postcard from Leipzig): critics scathing, only Straube sympathetically "captivated"; inquires whether I would wish to come to Leipzig."). (Note that Hupka’s message does not state that the critics of his playing were scathing, nor did he use the word “entzückt.”) The diary does not record a response, and there are further postcards from Hupka and Vrieslander, recorded on March 1 and 2. |
