Footnotes1 Writing of this postcard is not recorded in Schenker's diary. It replies to a letter (which is not known to survive) the receipt of which is recorded in his diary at OJ 4/4, p. 3535, November 6, 1930: "Von v. Cube (Br.): dankt für meine Mitteilung, stoßt noch immer auf Widerstand in Duisburg. Ein Musiker namens Reichard scheint sich dort als mein Schüler auszugeben u. v. Cube im Wege zu stehn, auch ist ihm das Seminar in Duisburg noch verschlossen, plant daher als Ausweg von Lehrer des Instituts einen Vortrag zu halten." ("From von Cube (letter): thanks [me] for my communication; is still coming up against resistance in Duisburg. A musician by the name of Reichard appears to be passing himself off there as my pupil and to be standing in the way of von Cube. Also the Seminar in Duisburg is still closed to him, so he plans, as a way out from [being a] teacher at the institute, to deliver a lecture"). 2 This refers to a music teacher in Essen named Reichert (or Reichardt) who was passing himself off as a former pupil of Schenker's. Cube mentioned this in a letter that has not survived (see note 1); the subject is mentioned again in his next letter to Schenker, OJ 9/34, [22], November 22, 1930. 3 A series of lectures to music teachers, planned by Weisse with support from Furtwängler and the Prussian Minister for Education, Leo Kestenberg. |
