Gestern sandte mir Hertzka ² ein französisches Blatt aus Lausanne (Schweiz) ³ vom 18. II. d.J. zu, worin im Leitartikel (!) H. Kufferath sich ausschließlich 4 lange Spalten - Spalte von oben bis unten - mit „op. 111“, ⁴ d.h. mit meinen dort angebrachten politischen Excursen beschäftigt. Daß so was die „U.E.“ erlaube, die ein Monopol von seiten der K. K. Regierung habe, daß ich Amerika [?nahegetreten] wäre, ⁵ noch eher die Kriegserklärung Wilson 's da [?war] u.dgl. mehr, – was mich alles sehr belustigt hat. Das paßte den französischen Lumpen, daß man sie für das nähme, wofür sie sich selbst trotz allen Bübereien halten, – nun, das überlasse ich unseren Frankomanen, denen solcher Zucker ähnlich willkommen ist; aber im selben Maße, als sie Lügen über Deutschland in aller Welt verbreiten, mag mir doch erlaubt sein, zumindest - die Wahrheit ihnen zu sagen. Sie sollen nur sehen, wie sie mit dieser so fertig werden, wie Deutschl. schließlich mit jenem auf die Dauer doch fertig werden wird. Welche Symptome, womit der Leitartikler, so etwas in einer {recto} Sonate, u. jetzt muß wieder Bernardi , Treitschke u.s.w. herhalten, die beliebsten Beweise für [in pencil:]angeblich Tendenz zur Kriegentfesselung auf Seiten Deutschlands!

Yesterday, Hertzka ² sent me a French newspaper from Lausanne (Switzerland) dated February 18 of this year, ³ in which in the lead article (!) Mr. Kufferath, in four long columns – full-length columns –, deals exclusively with [my] Op. 111 , ⁴ i.e. with the political arguments that I invoke there. That UE, which has a monopoly from the Imperial-Royal government, would permit such a thing as my taking America to task, ⁵ even more so Wilson's declaration of war, and such like matters – all of which has amused me greatly. It suited those French scoundrels that people take them for what they consider themselves to be, despite all [their] knavish ways – I leave that to the enthusiasts for France among us, to whom such sweet-talk is similarly welcome. However, since they spread lies about Germany far and wide, I feel equally at liberty at least to speak the truth to them. They should only realize that, in so ridding themselves of this truth, so Germany will eventually, in the course of time, rid itself of them. What symptoms [are shown] by the author of the leading article, who can read so much into a {recto} sonata, and now Bernhardi , Treitschke, etc. will be the ones to suffer, as the popular proof of the alleged tendency, on the German side, to start wars!

--The Arbeiterzeitung as ever unreservedly guilty of high treason. Wherever it can, it gets in the way of peace, naturally out of sheer Trotsky-inspired greed.
