Du versprachst mir zu schreiben. Da du trotzdem nicht schreibst, nehme ich an, daß M. V. überhaupt nicht diskutabel ist, vermutlich hat er auch von dir eine Mitgift („große Finanzierung“) begehrt, wie seinerzeit à conto v Hob. von mir? Jedenfalls lohnte es zu wissen, wie es ausgegangen ist, da H. Wbg. mir nicht grantigartet hat. 2

Von Hob. ist vorgestern endlich ein Lebenszeichen aus Frankreich eingelangt, er geht nach Holland, kommt aber gegen Ende Oktober nach Wien u. – o! welches Glück!!! – zu den Stunden: 3 warum er mich aber so gequält hat, mich solange im Ungewissen ließ!

{recto} So ist es mir, die Raten von Mozio addiert, in diesem Jahre noch erspart, unter so großen Verlusten zu verkaufen, hinter denen der letzte Abgrund 0 gähnt. Gott sei Dank! Inzwischen mache ich die Arbeit fertig. 4

Regt sich nichts bei dir?!? Laß doch hören, am besten dich sehen, (wann du willst u. kannst)

You promised to write to me. Since you nonetheless do not write, I assume that M. V. is entirely undiscussable; perhaps he requested a dowry (“great financing”) also from you, as Hoboken, on account, previously did from me? In any event it would be worth knowing how things worked out, since Mr. Weissberger was not grumpy with me. 2

From Hoboken, a sign of life finally came from France the day before yesterday; he is going to Holland, but will be arriving at the end of October in Vienna and – oh, what joy!!! – for his lessons; 3 but why did he torture me so, leaving me in the dark for such a long time!

{recto} Reckoning the installment payments from Mozio, I have thus so far been spared having to sell, in spite of such great losses; beyond this the ultimate abyss zero yawns. Thanks be to God! In the meantime, I am finishing the work. 4

Is anything stirring at your place?!? Do let us hear from you, better still see you (when you wish, and can).

1 Writing of this postcard is recorded in Schenker's diary for October 8, 1933: “An Floriz (K.): das Ergebnis?” (“To Floriz (postcard): the result?”).

2 On September 26, Schenker had written to Alfred Weissberger on Violin’s behalf, presumably concerning a position at the Neue Schule für Musik und Bühnenkunst. —Schenker’s diary for October 5 records: “Von Floriz (K.): ist von Weisberger [sic] eingeladen worden, wird berichten.” (“From Floriz (postcard): he has had an invitation from Weissberger, will report.”); that for October 10 records: “Violin von 11–¾12h […] – über den Weisberger [sic]-Schwindel” (“Violin from 11 o’clock to 11:45 […] – concerning the Weissberger fraud.”). – Schenker inserts an emdash at this point, then continues without paragraph-break.

3 The letter from Hoboken is not known to survive. Its receipt is recorded in Schenker’s diary for October 7, 1933: “Von Hoboken durch die Rotterdamer Bank S. 1560.”(“ From Hoboken, via the Rotterdam Bank, 1,560 shillings.”). Schenker’s reply to him is OJ 89/9, [2], October 7, 1933.
