Verehrter Freund!

Herzl. Grüße
Ihr

Revered Friend,

Have you still not received a letter, sent off long ago, with enclosure for Breitkopf? I was astounded to learn from your two kind letters that you were still not in possession of it. 1 More details soon; for now I am very anxious today [to give] you my solemn assurance that I am not at all annoyed with you, but that I nurture precisely the same feeling of friendship. It’s all in your imagination. 2

Cordial greetings,
Your

Footnotes

1 No items of correspondence from Schenker to d’Albert are known to survive, nor is anything known about the missing letter or enclosure.

2 What has caused this awkwardness between the two men is unclear. It is, however, possible to detect a gradual cooling of relationships between them from OJ 9/6, [19], May 8, 1897, following Schenker’s reaction to Gernot. The turning point must, though, have been Schenker’s meeting with d’Albert on February 7, 1897, when Schenker in his diary describes d’Albert as “an unfullfilled personality: he lacks what it takes to be a great artist, a great human ... [he is] a muted figure.”: see OJ 9/6, [16], footnote.
