Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor!

Dear Director,

Please very kindly retrieve the remaining gatherings, 17 and on, [while you are] in Leipzig! 1 I need them urgently.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to separate the book from the score for ease of study; and let the price indicate only that the two can be had more cheaply than each individually, if the items are purchased together, than if [in left margin:] they are[end cue] purchased individually. 2 But then, you are more familiar with this [than I]. Tomorrow, the four paragraphs will be on their way to you. 3

[overwritten across paras. 1-2 and valediction in crayon:] Dealt with March 15

With kind regards,
Your devoted

Footnotes

1 Presumably Hertzka was going on business to Leipzig, where the printers, Breitkopf & Härtel, and Universal Edition’s other office were located.

2 This arose directly from the meeting that Schenker and Hertzka had had the previous morning on the topic of the proposed edition by Schenker of the orchestral score of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

3 For the 1912 edition of Niloff, Instrumentations-Tabelle (cf. WSLB 29, December 16, 1908), which Hertzka had refused to print for the 1909 large edition, and was deferred to a future edition, and which is divided into four paragraphs.
