Das Rondo aber: hätte Schumann dieses Engländerstück 2 gehört, dann erst hätte er – e contrario – begriffen, daß, was er etwa „himmlische Länge“ nannte, zum besonderen Schubert’chen Inhalt technisch gehört, d. h. ein solcher Inhalt kann in das Sinfonische nur durch Länge eingehen! But the Rondo: had Schumann heard this Englishman’s 2 piece, only then would he have understood – by reverse reasoning – what he called “heavenly length”, especially in Schubertian content technically; that is to say, such a content can fit into a symphonic context only by being long! I shall {recto} clarify this when we next see each other. Kalmus has not yet made a decision. A. , a manuscript owned by the Society of Friends of Music, published by Universal Edition in April 1933 with a commentary by Schenker. “K.” would then be Alfred Kalmus, the director of Universal Edition. |
