Hausenstein served on the staff of the Münchener Neueste Nachrichten until 1933, when the Munich police force had him dismissed from the editorial board. Thereafter, he worked on the Frankfurter Zeitung from 1934 until its enforced closure in 1943. Hausenstein was married to a Belgian Jewish interpreter, Marguerite Kohn.
