Verehrtester Herr Hammer! 1

Wo stecken Sie?

Most revered Mr Hammer, 1

Where might you be? How did it go for you in London? I read some things in the Neue Freie Presse . Did the Albertina-Tietze-scandal 2 involve you as well? Yes, it’s the Tietzery that sets its sights on what is new, what is newest, and tears apart the “old trousers” just to make “new” ones! (Ugh!). We send you and your wife our best greetings and ask for quick word.

Footnotes

1 Writing of this postcard is recorded in Schenker’s diary for July 26, 1925: “An Hammer (Ansichtsk.): Nachfrage.” (“To Hammer (picture postcard): inquiry.”). – A photocopy of this letter exists as OJ 5/15a, [11].

2 The art historian Hans Tietze (1880–1954) was a founding member of the Gesellschaft zur Förderung der modernen Kunst in Wien (the Association for the Promotion of Modern Art in Vienna). At the Ministry of Education, he instituted a museum reform that included reorganization of the Albertina print collection. He resigned from his position in 1925.

3 Schenker is most likely asking after the first print (or Probeabzug (test print), as Hammer calls it in OJ 11/36, [18], August 18, 1925) of his mezzotint portrait of Schenker. On the same day that he wrote this letter, Schenker wrote to Moriz Violin (OJ 6/7, [23]): “Wenn nur auch schon Hammers Bildnis draußen wäre, Lie-Liechen findet diese Arbeit unendlich überlegen, – ich selbst weiß doch nicht recht, wie ich aussehe u. der Spiegel war nie mein ‘Confidant.’” (“If only Hammer’s portrait were on sale – Lie-Liechen finds this work incomparably superior – I myself do not really know what I look like, and the mirror was never my ‘confidant.’”). The final print of the portrait was produced in October 1925; the Probeabzug is probably that preserved at OJ 72/14, item 8, inscribed “Vorletzter Probedruck [penultimate proof]. Victor Hammer 1925.”
