Es ist selbstverständlich, dass zwischen der Uebernahme des I. Bandes und der Herausgabe des II. ein Junctine besteht. Denn wie Sie ja selbst zugegeben haben, ist es nicht möglich, dass die beiden Bände in verschiedenen Verlägen erscheinen.

Ich setzte bei Abfassung des Vertrages voraus, dass noch eine recht grosse Anzahl von Bänden der "Theorien und Phantasien" vorhanden sind und es wäre mir sehr angenehm, wenn Sie mir auf Grund Ihrer Aufzeichnungen mitteilen wollten, welche beiläufige Anzahl vorrätig sein dürfte. Sollte die Auflage des I. Bandes jedoch zum grossen Teile verkauft sein und wir {2} auch da mit einer Neuauflage rechnen müssen, dann würde dies wohl die Basis stark verschieben und ich fürchte, dass ich dann überhaupt nicht imstande wäre, die Sache durchzuführen.

Sehr wichtig wäre es mir auch zu wissen, ob Sie die etwa ⇧ später ⇧ notwendigwerdende II. Auflage ⇧ des I. Bandes ⇧ unverändert bestehen lassen würden, oder ob Aenderungen geplant sind. Bei unverändertem Neudruck wäre an Stelle des Neusatzes eine photographische, (anastatische) Vervielfältigung möglich, die zwar auch sehr kostspielig ist, aber immerhin billiger als der Neusatz wäre. Wie Sie aber die I. Auflage ändern, fiele diese Kombination weg!

Der Neusatz und Neudruck des I. Bandes (30 Bogen) würde ⇧ derzeit ⇧ etwa M 75.000 kosten. Den Neudruck des II. Bandes muss ich (bei 1000 Exemplaren und den heutigen Preisen) mit ca. M 50.000 taxieren, so dass falls die beider Bände notwendig wäre, das eine Investion von ca. M 125.000.- bedeuten würde, oder in unserer traurigen österreichischen Währung 1 ¼ Millionen Kronen! Sie werden selbst einsehen, dass das ein Ding der Unmöglichkeit wäre. Es müsste also die Frage einer Neuherstellung des I. Bandes derzeit überhaupt nicht in Betracht komen und wir müssten noch so viele Exemplare verkaufen können, dass dadurch das Risiko des II. Bandes und des etwa noch folgenden Ergänzungsbandes ² vermindert würde.

In drawing up the contract, I presupposed that a significantly large number of the volumes of the "Theories and Fantasies" are still in stock, and I should be very pleased if you would let me know on the basis of your records roughly how many ought to be available. If on the other hand the larger part of the print-run of volume I is sold out, and we {2} are having to reckon with a new edition of that too, then this would really greatly alter the basis, and I fear that I would then be in no position whatsoever to carry the matter through.

It would be very important for me also to know whether you would leave the second edition ⇧ of volume I ⇧ that may ⇧ later ⇧ become necessary unaltered, or whether changes are planned. In the case of an unchanged new edition rather than a re-setting of the type, a photographic (anastatic) reproduction would be possible, which would also be very costly, it is true, but at least cheaper than a re-setting. But as you alter the first edition, this combination becomes unworkable.

The new setting and new printing of volume I (30 gatherings) would ⇧ at the present time ⇧ cost some 75,000 Marks. I must estimate the new printing of volume II (with 1,000 copies at today's prices) at 50,000 Marks, so that if the printing of both volumes were to be necessary, that would mean an investment of 125,000 Marks, or in our lamentable Austrian currency 1¼ million Kronen!
