Footnotes

1 Receipt of this letter is not recorded in Schenker's diary. The day of writing was a Wednesday, so the ultimatum gave Schenker only two days to produce his material.

2 i.e. the additional material requested by Hertzka at his presumed meeting with Schenker on the morning on November 27 (OC 52/29 and WSLB 26, November 23 and 24). These materials were to prove excessive and to cause difficulties.

3 The urgency relates to the imminent re-establishment of the Vienna Conservatory as a state institution, the Academy for Music and Performing Art, which was due to occur on January 1, 1909, and for the new curriculum of which Universal Edition wished the Academy to adopt the Instrumentation-Table.
