neu / Abonn II./II 1925
in Prag

Verehrter Meister 1

habe persönlich bei Gutmann Einsicht genommen

2 Abonn. bezahlt 24
3 Abonn. bezahlt 25
5 Abonn. beangabt 24 bezahlt 25

in Prague

Revered Master, 1

I have personally inspected the situation at Gutmann's:

2 subscriptions paid up 1924
3 subscriptions paid up 1925
5 subscriptions downpayment 1924 paid up 1925

Forgive me if I keep asking whether the billing, not by H[ertzka] , with the whole of Der Tonwille as concerns the 1924 deadline could have been mislaid. – In my view, a subscription taken out is certainly binding for both [?periods]. I have thought of nothing else, and I have emphatically been transparent with you over each application. Now this has all been put to rights, just as Universal Edition, Weisse.

With warmest greetings,
Your devoted

Footnotes

1 Receipt for what is presumbly this letter, despite the discrepancy of dates, is recorded on February 18, 1925: "Von Brünauer (Br., durch das Mädchen): hat zwei Abonnements im Jahre 1924 genommen, schickt die Bestätigung." (From Brünauer (letter, by hand of his maid): has taken out two subscriptions in the year 1924, sends the confirmation."). In his diary for February 21, Schenker recorded writing to Otto Vrieslander: “berichte über den Stand der Angelegenheit mit Hertzka, der Betrug sei erwiesen; über den Verrat von Weisse u. Brünauer in der Abonnement-Angelegenheit.” (“I report on the state of play with Hertzka, the fraud has been proven; about Weisse’s and Brünauer’s betrayal in the subscription matter.”).

On February 1, 1925, Schenker had received from UE the accounts for the second half of 1924, and complained about them (OC 52/527–532), at the same time writing to pupils and friends soliciting their experiences in subscribing to Der Tonwille. (For a fuller account, see Der Tonwille: Pamphlets ..., Eng. transl., vol. II (New York: Oxford University Press, 2005), pp. viii–ix.)
