Es ist mir unmöglich, mich über die Herausgabe einer zweiten Handschrift von Beethoven zu entscheiden, solange die Universaledition den neuen Vertrag, der auch für die Heraus- gabe von Bedeutung ist, nicht erledigt hat. Dies verzögerte sich nun seit zweieinhalb Monaten[,] ebenso die Vorauszahlung der Honorarteile. Jedenfalls danke ich Ihnen für Ihre bisherigen Bemühungen. Auch das Einverständnis mit Dr. Einstein ist durch einen leidigen Konkurrenzstreit der Universaledition mit dem Drei-Masken-Verlage bisher gestört gewesen, so daß ich bestimmt nicht an[corr] der Frühlingssonate rühre, bevor nicht die Universaledition dem Drei-Masken -Verlage versöhnlich die gebotene Hand gedrückt hat. Es müssen ja nicht immer nur Autoren gedrückt werden. ²

Herr Dr. Richtera Kalmus ⇧ sagte mir unlängst, daß ich jetzt den neuen Vertrag bekommen soll [cued from bottom margin:] ⇧ ist geschehen! [end cue] ⇧ und auch das erste Honorar, was ja immerhin möglich ist, außerdem, daß Herr Direktor Hertzka jetzt eben in München ist war ⇧ und mit Direktor Einstein sprechen wollte. Im übrigen wäre ich natürlich mit Ihrem Vorschlage, den letzten Satz streichen[corr] zu lassen [einverstanden], {2} wenn seine Handschrift nicht zu finden ist. ³ Falls die denkbare Frühlingssonate wegen Dreistein und Ein-Masken-Verlag nicht erreichbar ist, so täten wir gut daran, uns auf das Streichquartett opus 95 zu einigen. Herr Dr. Haß Haas ⇧ ist bisher zu mir, so wie zu den meisten Mitmenschen nicht wirsch ⁴ gewesen und ich möchte Ihnen ihn deshalb nur, wenn es nötig ist, aufsuchen. ⁵

It is impossible for me to decide on the publication of a second Beethoven manuscript while Universal Edition has not completed the new contract, which is also important for publication. This has been delayed for two and a half months now, as has the advance of honoraria. In any case, I thank you for your efforts so far. What is more, the agreement with Dr. Einstein has been impaired up until now because of an unpleasant competition dispute between Universal Edition and Drei Masken, so I am certainly not going to touch the "Spring" Sonata, not before Universal Edition has shaken the conciliatory hand offered by Drei Masken. It must not be only the authors that have shaken [hands]. ²

Dr. Richtera Kalmus ⇧ told me recently that I should now get the new contract [cued from bottom margin:] – ⇧ this has occurred! [end cue] ⇧ and also the first fee, which is of course quite possible; he also said that Director Hertzka is was in Munich ⇧ just now and had wanted to talk to Director Einstein.
